In a stunning turn of events, a Russian prosecutor decided to indict a Russian national for allegedly making false statements against the U.S. government on national security grounds.

The prosecution claimed that Russian state security agents and operatives, who infiltrated Russian state-owned media outlets, have been covering for the U.S. government for more than a decade.

At a hearing that began last week, U.S. District Judge James Robart sentenced an unnamed Russian national to nine years in prison and a fine of up to $2 million.

The Russian case is one of several that have been brought in court and are pending. The U.S. Department of Justice has indicated it will continue to prosecute the Russian government. A spokesman for President Donald Trump said: "The United States is deeply committed to ensuring that no country is ever subject to this kind of pressure that we have seen in recent months
