In November 2015, Shrem said that he started an illegal money-transfer business with a group called "The Bitcoin Industry," and that he had sold $1 million of bitcoins using Bitcoin (BTC).

The two companies have since filed suit against each other in federal court in Brooklyn, New York, and in 2014, the US Department of Justice unsealed a separate complaint against two of the two companies. While the lawsuit alleges the Winklevoss firms and Shrem "have engaged in illegal conduct that is not only not consistent with federal law, but also is contrary to the public interest," it also states that it is likely that the defendants would be able to convince US district courts to dismiss the case. The New York City police are investigating reports of child sexual exploitation.
