"[We]'ll see how it all works out, but the stakes are so high that it's almost laughable," Hutchinson wrote. "[That's] our only chance of saving humanity. And what is this all about?"
The company, which has $3 billion in assets under management and has had a $6 billion investment for the past 18 months, has been accused of poor management, "inefficiency, and poor communication" by an audit firm, the Mars One Foundation.
On Thursday, Mars One announced that it would sell its Mars One business, with a total value below $200 billion (see update below).
While the company doesn't name Mars One entities, it does list the Netherlands as a potential partner. A follow up to the announcement said: "We are going to invest a lot of money in this project, but it will be the best investment for the team and the company. The Netherlands will be the next country we will invest in."
For now, the Dutch government is not ruling out Mars One's involvement, though it does not name the company.
On Monday, Mars One's website stated that it would be "a new venture for the next 40 years."
On Friday, Mars One's website explained that it would be "the oldest and only company to ever build Mars One on Mars, and the only company to use the technology that is now available to us and to the public."
Meanwhile, in early November, Mars One filed for bankruptcy. On Monday, the company said that the court would not pursue any of the bankruptcy filings filed by Mars One.
There are still two other companies that are interested in Mars One, and they have yet to file for bankruptcy.
"Mars One is one of the great companies of our time," says David Stauffer, an attorney for the nonprofit Earthjustice, "but the company is not one of the big players."
And we're not even halfway to the end of the world. This may be the end of the Mars one thing.
