We were also pleasantly surprised about how well [they] managed that trust."
The company's first consumer wearable will be a smartwatch, a device that will allow users to track heart activity and monitor their heart rate through sensors on the wrist. Apple will offer the first consumer-ready smartwatch on the market now, based on Apple Watch 2, which debuted last year. Apple Watch 2 also is a collaboration between Google and Samsung that will be available to consumers in early 2017.
"The smartwatch app will show you the heart rate, and it will even show you how long you are at rest or how much time is left to rest between steps," said Schatz. "This is a real demonstration of how we will be able to deliver health care for all of our users. The health-monitoring and smartwatch app will be very exciting for Apple Watch 2 and for many other healthcare apps, including Fitbit and Apple Pay."
The smartwatch app will also offer users a way to set up a "smart doctor" experience on the app, which will allow users to manage and track their symptoms and to make recommendations based on how they feel. The app will also enable people to easily share their information with other Aetna members’ even as the app doesn't share information to other Apple Watch members.
The two companies said their goal with the smartwatch app was to offer members the best possible coverage, without compromising the app's user experience. And Apple believes the App Store will give consumers a much more complete experience by giving users more choices about what they want and need. The company also emphasized the way the App Store can help companies create the best content for the app.
"The App Store lets you search for the app, and with the Apple Watch, you can see what the app is up to, what apps it is selling, and much more," said Schatz. "We believe our app allows us to deliver our members the best product possible. The more we do this, the more we can deliver and improve the user experience for the app."
