"We believe that the free Remind service is already well-known
"We believe that the free Remind service is already well-known in the community and our team members have been working hard to make it better," Verizon Communications CEO Lowell McAdam said in a statement released after the company said it has stopped providing paid SMS notifications on the Verizon network.
Verizon said the decision to discontinue Remind's free services came after it was contacted by teachers in Los Angeles, the Sacramento area, and around the country. That's where parents and students took to social media to express their support for the service.
"It's clear the service was going to be discontinued, and teachers are now being targeted and targeted with more and more messages," said a teacher and student at the school in San Bernardino County, California.
Verizon said Remind is still available on the Verizon network.
"We do not offer free and paid SMS notifications," the company said in its statement, which was first reported by The Verge.
The company said it is making "several changes" to Remind, including making it free of charge for all users. The company said those changes include making it more accessible to the Internet, adding new features like a new messaging feature and moving its free service to mobile.
The move comes at a time when a number of other businesses are also facing similar issues.
"The FCC has put their hands up," said Matt Johnson, a professor at the University of South Carolina, who has studied the issue. "Their hands are tied. And when we go out and do business with the Federal Communications Commission, they're asking us to shut down our business. And that's what we are doing."
