"We are excited about the resolution because this new law
"We are excited about the resolution because this new law has significant implications for how we define cosmology," said Dr. Roberta van der Pijl, IAU president. "It may also be useful to look for other important cosmological parameters that are consistent with our understanding of the expansion of the universe. Such new parameters may be particularly relevant to our understanding of the origin of life as we know it today."
The first steps to the discovery of light were made by observing the cosmic microwave background radiation (CMBR), a type of material that emits light when it travels through space and, in some cases, in the ultraviolet.
The astronomers' work, which was published in the Journal of Numerical Spectroscopy, could help scientists better understand how such a system would exist. The resolution, which was voted into existence by 11 members of the IAU panel, includes a resolution for the LemaƮtre law.
"Our agreement is based on the principle of reciprocity, which is a concept in physics that makes it possible to exchange information between different sources of information," said Dr. van der Pijl. The LemaƮtre law has long been seen as a way to distinguish between known and unknown objects in the cosmos.
The resolution calls for research on the structure of our universe, how it relates to other dimensions, and whether such objects are even possible.
The resolution makes clear that the origin of life is not currently known, but "at least it is possible that we might someday have access to some of the information that we might hope to obtain through such interactions."
The resolution is the first to have its name, with the IAU commissioning astronomers from around the world to work on the matter. It will be a first for the IAU and the IAU's international partners.
"We have received so many encouraging messages," said Dr. Van der Pijl, a member of the IAU panel. "This resolution is a clear indication that there is a fundamental scientific consensus about the universe in which both science and practical understanding of the origin of life may exist. It will be particularly helpful to the community."
