The second menu asks applicants to choose from two categories
The second menu asks applicants to choose from two categories of "ethnicities," with "Indians" and "Indians of African descent." The "Indians" menu does not include names of South Africans, but instead refers to "indians of African descent." (This was to appease the "Mulatto" and "Coloured" sections of the "Indians" menu.)
And that's not all. A few tweets and an email went out to the people complaining. "This is an outrage and racist slur that is not welcome in college- or university-level social studies. Please apologize to all those in the student body."
I hope I'm not being a racist.
But I'd like to think that the situation really was not so bad until the last day of class. As I said, the form has two black and two white options: "Native American" and "Native American" . What this really means is that the first option is white, the second white.
It's not clear what racial categories the form calls for, but I think the "Coloured" page is just plain ugly.
The second page is a fairly straightforward English version of the "Mulatto" form. It's actually quite an odd thing to use but it's nice to see the form has a Japanese name.
