[T]he reality is that we have to continue to do our best to make sure that this is an open case of sexual harassment, and that this is not the next big thing. We must not simply continue to ignore the fact that many of our employees will be on paid leave, and, in the end, we have to do our best to make sure that these problems don't persist. This is a complex issue, and we always want to make sure that our people and our employees are the best they can be. The first step is to make sure that we don’t repeat our past mistakes in the future, and that we are taking the necessary steps to mitigate them. We need to take the time to ensure that our employees and partners are safe, and that we are able to provide them with equal opportunities, including a healthy workplace environment, but we also need to do everything we can to ensure these people remain in our company’s fold. This is what I want to do in the future. I want to be absolutely clear and clear: I am not and will not tolerate the misconduct that has been described as being committed in this past year, and I will continue to be absolutely clear and clear about that. I will not tolerate any form of sexual harassment, and I will continue to be absolutely clear about that.
On Tuesday, Google apologized to employees.
The company added that the employees would be given a "reasonable amount of time" to "refrain from further comments and comments from any other employees. We do not accept any salary, bonus or other compensation as a result of our conduct or other issues relating to our relationship with Google employees."
On Thursday, Google's new CEO Sundar Pichai said that his company would not be returning "comments, remarks or comments made by any employee related to an alleged sexual activity." This is no way to be sure, at least not from the company's perspective.
On Friday, the news website Gawker reported that Google had told employees that it was terminating employees if they complained about their company's hiring practices.
[I'm] very pleased to hear that we are not going to be terminating someone. But I am not going to be deterred. We have absolutely no intention of doing that. I'm just going to make sure that we have a process in place to determine what they are doing and what kind of process we can be in.
