Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) – called Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), are more likely to go to suicide than children without autism.

Researchers led by Prof. David A. White of the University of Minnesota and colleagues found that, compared with those with ASD, children without ASD have higher rates of suicide than those without.

"We know from several studies that children with ASD have higher rates of suicide than children without ASD," said Dr. White, who also is a professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Missouri. "This is also true for children with ADHD."

The researchers found that children with ASD have higher rates of suicide than children without ASD.

"As a general rule, children with ASD suffer from an increased risk for suicide. However, the rates of suicide for children without ASD are more than twice as high as for children with ADHD. This is consistent with previous data from the United States and the Netherlands showing that people with autism are more at risk for suicide," explained Dr. White. "This raises the question of whether those with ASD could be more at risk for suicide."

The study was published online May 17 and was supported by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD).

"The increase in suicide risk for children without ASD could have been due to reduced risk factors, such as low level of education and a lower level of social contact," said Dr. White. "As a result, we found that children with ASD are at increased risk for suicide.
