The emails were sent to over 40 government, defense, and other industries. They contained information on contracts, a list of companies, and the names of many of the affected government departments. According to FireEye, this is a relatively common attack.
"In the past week, I have heard from several former government IT staff that in their home states, government service providers like UPS, FedEx, and UPS and FedEx, and others, are actively being penetrated by APT29," FireEye wrote. "This is just one example.
"The attacks may be targeted here in the US, but to many in the broader IT community, the NSA is still using the same tool in the United States to target IT infrastructure."
"The information on the APT29 is in a variety of places, including a list of companies that were targeted by APT29 and in which the document was presented," FireEye added.
"It is important for government agencies to continue to protect the IT infrastructure of the United States and our own government," the report said.
