The company plans to start accepting loans and pay off debt by the end of March with $200 million in financing.

But the bankruptcy case has become increasingly polarizing in the internet age in recent years as companies like Google and Microsoft have stepped up their aggressive litigation tactics.

"The company has made a lot of progress on this, but there's still some issues with our legal standing with the plaintiffs," said Paul Wieseke, a computer science professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago, who was not involved in the bankruptcy proceedings.

While the company's financial position has been stable, the company is faced with a large amount of uncertainty about how much of its business to divest from its Internet service provider, the largest provider of broadband internet service in the United States.

The company's board of directors has been asked to consider divestment options by the US Justice Department, and the decision will be made during closed-door meetings with other stakeholders in the company's business.

To support its financial position, Windstream has said through several of its lawyers that it is willing to divest from all and substantially all of its internet service provider business if it can obtain a court order preventing the company from doing so.
