The CIA has been conducting surveillance and drone strikes on suspected Al Qaeda in Yemen since March, when it was involved in the bombing of an American drone. This year, the agency has also deployed a "humanitarian" drone in the Gulf, but the American military was not involved in the attack.
The CIA's involvement, the Times said, came in response to a call that the U.S. government was seeking an investigation into possible coordination with al Qaeda. But a CIA spokesman said he did not know the scope of the investigation.
The Times described the agency's efforts as "the ultimate expression of the growing concern that the U.S. government, and al Qaeda, seeks to undermine its allies, both inside and outside the country."
