In an email to BuzzFeed News, a representative for Iran's foreign ministry condemned the "unprecedented" actions of the hackers.

"These actions will undoubtedly damage the security of the Republic and further the ongoing development of Iran as an international player in foreign affairs," the official said. "The government of Iran has made clear to Russia, China, and the United States that it will not tolerate any activities by any entity that is trying to influence the government's affairs, including the government of Iran."

In an email to BuzzFeed News, a spokesperson for Iran's Foreign Ministry called the hackers "an act of cyber-terrorism and a terrorist act."

"The Iranian government, with the support of the international community, has been working hard to ensure that the country can meet its objectives and continue its development of a diplomatic, economic, and security partnership with the European Union," the Foreign Ministry said in a statement. "The Iranian side of the border has been working closely with the European Union, including from a joint initiative with the European Union's National Security Council (NATO)," it added.
