On the other, Toyota is working on a self-driving truck that can drive itself.
"You don't have to look far to see how autonomous technology would work that way," said Pratt, noting that the industry would use the technology to solve problems in all areas, and that Toyota is "making a point" about it.
In the meantime, Toyota is working on a fully self-driving truck that can drive itself.
This year, Toyota's self-driving truck has had at least six iterations, which is a good result.
"We started thinking about the road around the Toyota Research Institute in December 2013, when [Toyota CEO] Mark [Toyota] was speaking in a very public and well-lit event," said John Torgersen, the Toyota Chief Technology Officer at the time.
"We thought we were going to have this idea of a fully autonomous truck, and so we went to the Toyota Research Institute, and I think that's been the most successful test of our approach to the technology."
Torgersen said Toyota's truck test has been "absolutely successful." But he pointed out that Toyota wants to use its research to improve autonomous vehicles while still being able to drive itself.
"It's just going to take Toyota for sure to make this happen," said Torgersen.
The question is how far that can go. In an interview with Tech.Dirt, Google's head of global auto research, Michael D'Ambrosio, said that Toyota's work will enable it to "find a way to drive itself in its own right without any artificial intelligence." This means it would have to build a self-driving truck to avoid collision with other autonomous vehicles, and it could also be forced to drive as though it was driving itself.
That seems to be the point of the self-driving truck that Pratt called Toyota. In a video that's just now coming out, Pratt said that Toyota would need to build a truck capable of reaching speeds of 100 miles per hour, or about 10 times the speed of a human's car.
Torgersen also added that Toyota's self-driving truck would use three-dimensional sensing to ensure that it's safe to drive itself and not just the way it is.
"The technology we're using is really the future of vehicle technology," said Pratt. "The technology that we're building is the same technology that's using cars to drive themselves."As the world's third-largest tobacco company, tobacco companies are expected to be
