Microsoft said last week that it was confident that "all of its new products will be ready in time for the holiday season." That's not true, but it's not as bad as the Surface Pro and Surface S.

The Surface line has had a year of big sales and a quarter of record sales—more than all the other laptops combined. The Surface Book and Surface Studio will be released on October 15, 2014, after some delay. The first Surface RT will arrive on October 27, 2014.

Microsoft is also building a big hardware business, with the Surface Pro being the largest single PC sold in the fourth quarter of this year, with 3.3 million systems sold. In the fourth quarter, the company sold more than 6.4 million notebooks, while making more than 3.5 million Surface Pro tablets in the same quarter, according to data from Gartner.

The company will be working on a new line of Surface laptops, including the Surface Pro 4, that will be sold at $249 with a 5th generation Intel processor. The notebook will be available from November 7.
