Microsoft has made billions from its extensive library of software

Microsoft has made billions from its extensive library of software patents. Most of those patents are based on the ExFAT file system. That file system is often used in software that is not supported by the original file system. While the original file system was the basis for Android's standard, exFAT was created to make it more secure. The exFAT file system is now available for use in all Android phones and tablets.

Microsoft is hoping that this new royalty-free approach will help Linux and Android developers to avoid the ever-present threat of litigation with Microsoft. The Open Invention Network announced today that it will join the Open Invention Network to "encourage developers to work on a Linux system that is open, secure, and compatible with Windows, Mac, and Linux."

The Open Invention Network also announced that it would join the Open Source Initiative to promote open source software.

Microsoft is a key investor in Open Source. Microsoft helped pioneer Free Software in 1986 when it created the GNU Project and was a key contributor to the Open Source Project. It also helped launch the GNU/Linux Foundation and its Linux Foundation. Microsoft is a key sponsor of the Linux Foundation and is currently working to establish and establish a Linux-friendly Linux Foundation.
