"Let's face it—we wanted to give away something we couldn't have ever gotten away with in the first place," says Nintendo's head of retail sales, Ken Nix. "The Legend of Zelda franchise is one thing, but we wanted to give people something new, and we wanted to put in a game that people can play on their Switch. And Nintendo gave us a lot of that. We wanted people to play Mario Kart 8 through the game—that was one of the most fun things we've ever done with the Nintendo Switch."
The new version of the game is already available for purchase on Nintendo's official site and has been officially announced as part of the upcoming Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Nix told Polygon. It will include a new character, new weapons, and even a set of costumes.
"It's a great thing to see that the Legend of Zelda franchise has been able to expand beyond its core audience," Nix said. "It's one of our more important and growing properties right now. We think that's the best thing to happen to us and we appreciate the support of our customers."
Nintendo did not provide any details about the game's new modes, but it did offer a number of new features. For starters, players will get to pick the color palette of their characters, and there will be an option to buy a specific weapon or outfit for a certain price.
The game also features a new mode that can be played through a single-player campaign without the purchase of four additional costumes for an additional price. The game will also be available for Nintendo Switch, allowing players to pick up the game's multiplayer game mode at least once.
In addition, Nintendo announced a new DLC, which will add seven new playable character types. The full list of characters on the official Nintendo Switch site is as follows:
Mario Kart 8: Bowser's Minifigures
Mario Kart 8: World Tour
Mario Kart 8: Yoshi's Island
Mario Kart 8: Yoshi's Island 2
Mario Kart 8: Super Circuit
