The European Parliament voted today (6 July) in favour of leaving the European Economic Area and for Brexit to be 'not subject to' any further EU legislative proceedings.
While the European Commission held a press conference outside the EU Commission building on 24 July, it took little time for its own members to address the issue after being informed that it would vote to leave the EU within a week.
In spite of the delays on 23 July, however, a deal was reached in principle between the two parties on Monday night, making it clear that any further 'Brexit Day' attack will be accompanied by a new EU Parliament vote.
In a statement, EU Commissioner Donald Tusk said:
"This is a major step forward for negotiations and a historic moment for European Union citizens. But if the UK is to remain in the EU, it will need to take steps to ensure that the negotiations are not hampered in any way.
"I am delighted that two major parties have agreed that the future of the EU is in question and the referendum has been postponed because it is now clear that they are prepared to take any course to get there.
"We have been asking the Commission to hold a parliamentary vote on the matter, but I believe that the process to hold the matter is still to be concluded.
"I am also convinced that if the UK remains in the EEA, it will have a new democratic process which will ensure that the Commission will be able to work with all stakeholders to ensure that the best possible outcome for the economy.
"I am particularly pleased that all parties agreed that the EEA must be given more flexibility and more flexibility to choose the best course for the future of the EU."
