"It's very important to look at how viewers view films before they watch them," says Dr. John K. Miller, a senior researcher with the Max Plank Institute for Chemistry in Mainz. "There is no one-size-fits-all formula for rating a film. All we know is that it's going to be good. We also know that it's going to be entertaining."
If that's so, perhaps a few years ago, there would have been some sort of a system to quantify how good or bad a film was. But those days were long gone. One factor that's changing is the way movies are being distributed and distributed around the world, and this has led to a significant shift of the consumer's perceptions of films to their more critical peers. There are certainly good films out there, but they're often not the ones we want to see in our living rooms.
The best that could be done is to figure out how to keep films from being watched too often. In a recent survey of moviegoers, 50% of respondents said that they watched a film with a negative rating as a major component of their taste in films—in other words, that they felt that an animated film didn't have enough value, despite seeing it before they even watched it.
That could have serious consequences: if a film's popularity is so high that it can't be seen by a much wider audience, one might think that it's probably a good thing that people don't watch all of the films and that, therefore, a film's popularity will decrease. But the truth is that filmgoers tend to be more critical of all things that they see, and they've shown us that what we really need is a way to watch movies that appeal to people who will never be able to imagine, and that's why we see so many films on the Internet that are so successful.
While we're at it, let's look at the other things that have helped with this shift:
1. Online media and the Internet for people to see.
While some of us might not believe that anything will ever get better, there's a lot of work to be done. If we're to change the way we view films, we need to start thinking about the things that make a film successful. Whether that means we start by looking at movies as a way to "watch" them or a way to watch them as a way to "just" learn about them, we can start to take note of the things that make them
