It's important to note that the Microsoft update does not require any special software or hardware to be installed, though it does require an operating system to be installed. So, while the company will certainly make it easier for users to backup their Windows 10 data, there's also the risk that a clean system will be lost or erased.

The company is also advising people to avoid installing an update that contains an anti-malware update that might be responsible for all data loss.

The update was originally intended to fix an issue introduced with Windows 8.1, but a fix for the problem has yet to be released. ®
