It would be "somewhat unusual" for these missions to be delayed, but it is clear that this could be very bad news for NASA. For all its progress on space infrastructure, NASA is still facing a number of problems. If the SLS launch is cancelled, or the Orion spacecraft is not sent to its planned destination, the agency could face a major crisis. For example, if the SLS rocket were to be replaced with a new version of the Dragon spacecraft and all the crew on board were removed from the spacecraft, it would have to be canceled.

In the end, the lack of a deadline for SLS and Orion will also cause problems for NASA, with delays and budget crunching at the very least. In fact, NASA could potentially face a very real financial hit if it were to miss SLS.
