In Villainous, you've got the power to summon a wolf
In Villainous, you've got the power to summon a wolf archer to battle as King of England. Can you do this in a traditional game? Will you have to use magic to make it work? How many of you will be playing it all over again (and maybe even more so)?
Villainous is a game that's been around in the real world for more than a century. There are many variations on the theme, and most of them are easy to understand to play. But Villainous is not for the faint of heart. It's easy to play and hard to master. Some players will feel overwhelmed by the sheer power of the Villainous system and want to put their money where their mouths are. Other players might want to take on a more difficult role for the Villainous system, but you can always change your mind and stay in the game. (I once had a game where I was playing the Prince of Wales from a different storyboard and I wanted to know if I could kill him and if I'd ever get to see the Prince of Wales in real life.)
With a simple text-based interface, a quick introduction, a simple rules system and a simple story, Villainous could easily stand up to all the other games that used the same graphics and rules system. It was, after all, a very short game at the time, so it was easy to forget about it, and a much more effective, fun, and addictive strategy game. But now that Villainous has been around for over 20 years, I'm starting to think that most of us haven't played it yet.
I'll be honest: Villainous isn't for the faint of heart. Villainous isn't for you just yet; it's already done well enough to become a good board game. It's only fair that my own personal experience with it is more than enough to warrant its continued existence. It's all about the challenge.
