In one of the questions, they asked whether Facebook users valued their time to get news stories about their friends and family and to make purchases on social media. This led to the following question:
"As more users read more stories, which Facebook likes, will they be more likely to buy or not buy something?"
"The answer is yes, but it's a good indicator that Facebook users love this product on a big scale," Corrigan says.
On December 25, cash's average monthly purchase price was $1,918, which is more than half of what Facebook customers bought in 2010. But when you compare that to the average monthly purchase price of $500 for a typical consumer, the results are even more interesting.
One of the researchers, Matt Rousu , told the crowd that the price of a new iPhone 4 is roughly $800, but that Facebook fans were more motivated to buy an iPhone 4.
"Our research shows that Facebook users have more enthusiasm for buying and selling things. They're more motivated to buy things that they love so they're spending more," he says. The researchers wanted to see if Facebook shoppers, who actually wanted to buy, would make more money by buying more digital content.
Rousu wasn't the only person who noticed that Facebook shoppers were more motivated.
"We were also pretty aware that we were spending more time on Facebook than we would have if we had just focused on one single subject," says Corrigan.
"You can get much more than just your social media posts or your newsfeeds. You can spend a lot of time on Facebook. And that's probably the biggest reason why I think a lot of people are interested in Facebook, even though it's so important."
Rousu says that when he first started looking at that question, he realized that there had not been enough research done to explain the value of Facebook to users.
"But now that I'm getting back to this, what I found is that Facebook is something that has become a central part of the online and social media ecosystem. People love it, and it's becoming a part of the way we think about and interact with information, so it's hard not to see what the value is in Facebook, and I just think that's going to be a really interesting question for Facebook to answer in the coming years."
He also pointed out that, while there's certainly an increasing number of people using Facebook, the most important thing for them to do is to
