In one case, he allegedly sent a message to a woman who was trying to pay someone to remove a photo of her in an email. The man eventually admitted that he had taken the photo, but said he didn't know why.
After Bauer's arrest in August, NASA sent Bauer several emails to the names, ages and locations of the woman's children, including her parents, her younger siblings and friends, who were also victims of Bauer's scheme. The emails contained some disturbing and explicit language that included the phrase "the man who uses the same passwords, the man who wants to take away the photos of his children, the man who can't wait to be seen by women," according to the indictment.
Bauer's lawyer, Stephen J. Cohen, has argued that the FBI's "pattern of harassing and stalking" of victims, who are often "very young," suggests a pattern of "patterns of victimization," according to the Los Angeles Times. His client has been arrested multiple times and is charged with two counts of second-degree harassment related to the alleged sextortion scheme.
Bauer's defense attorney, John A. Jones, said he had "no idea how far into this case" the federal government was taking the matter. "If they've pursued this type of thing, they should be very, very careful not to say anything like that," he told the Times.
The government has not announced when it will announce whether it will charge Bauer with the crimes, and it has asked for public comment on the matter.
