In addition to the I.D. Buzz and MEB plants, VW

In addition to the I.D. Buzz and MEB plants, VW is also expected to build a new car business, a source close to the company said. The I.D. Buzz will be based in a former factory in the heart of Munich and will be used to produce powertrains for the Volkswagen brand. The I.D. Buzz will supply some of the car's components and parts to VW's production lines.

The I.D. Buzz is designed to be a simple battery-powered vehicle and will be able to generate power from a battery charging station rather than a standard battery, VW COO Frank Wieseltier told Automotive News. According to Wieseltier, a prototype VW I.D. Buzz could be released in 2017.

But even if the I.D. Buzz is a true "electric car," it's not the only way for VW to get traction without relying on fossil fuels. In fact, a recent report by the German environmental group Ecotourism has argued that VW can sell the batteries to the world to help reduce its dependence on fossil fuels by cutting down on its reliance on coal and gas.

The new I.D. Buzz would offer a unique opportunity for VW to make some serious headway in the fight against climate change, as well as reduce its dependence upon carbon emissions. The company was recently awarded a $3.3 billion grant by the International Energy Agency, making it the second-largest donor to the UN's Sustainable Development Goals and the most important beneficiary of the Kyoto Protocol.

But it's not clear what VW's electric car will look like. The company's new car concept—which is still in the early stages—doesn't seem like a vehicle for the future.
