In a recent review of Overlord's latest game, Broken Sword, the game's technical director, Jason Dorn, told Ars: "The game is a fast, fun, and surprisingly good game, one that works on a daily basis on a regular basis. The experience is amazing."
Overlord's most visible improvement for a video game is the ability to render multiple frames at once, although this is more noticeable with the latest version of the game. This, apparently, is much more effective than the standard 8-frames-per-second rate seen on consoles and PCs.
Overlord has been widely criticized, and rightly so, for slowing down video games' game progress on a regular basis. The reason for this, the developers argue, is "something we all know is wrong."
In the past, the developers of games like Mass Effect, Bioshock Infinite, and Resident Evil have maintained that they'd like to see the game have a "low-hanging fruit" like the "low-quality" version of its predecessor. That means that the lack and low-quality of its new engine can't be used to make the game any prettier, and the developers say they'll just have to make it better.
The developers also say that the new "low-quality" version of the game is far better than the original and would be better suited for older platforms.
"As much as we've been happy with the quality of the new engine, we don't want to lose sight of the fact that this particular piece of hardware would be too small for a game which is so small for the game itself," says Dorn.
Overlord also has a pretty good track record of making games that work on a long-term basis, even if they don't provide all the content, such as the multiplayer and story-driven combat. "It wouldn't be possible to make games that were made long enough without this engine, but we have very high hopes for the future of games made with this. We're working on it with the best of intentions and very, very, very hard," says Dorn.
The game isn't perfect, of course. In a recent interview with Wired , the game's creator, James Kline, admitted that it "doesn't perform as well as we'd hoped." However, he also acknowledged that the new engine is "not a complete mess of a game that we are very happy with and that we are working on."About this mod adds more of the Dark
