The move was in response to the U.S. Coast Guard's request for a Navy aircraft carrier, a major military presence in the Pacific Ocean, to leave the island of Cyprus, where the U.S. military is conducting exercises.

The U.S. Navy said it had received no response from the carrier before the end of the exercise, but it expected a response by the end of next month with a possible decision on whether to end the exercise.

"It took us a little while to get there," said Chief of Naval Operations Adm. James R. Mattis, who was in the region on the mission.

U.S. Navy ships from the 2nd Fleet of the U.S.S. Maine, 3rd Fleet of the U.S. Maryland and the Navy's 7th Fleet have already departed the island of Cyprus, which has been a major military outpost since the end of the Cold War.

The ship was sent to the island after a U.S. Navy spokesman said it did not have permission to leave.

U.S. President Barack Obama said he was unaware of any plans to leave the island after the exercise.

The U.S. has a presence in the island, but a number of ships have returned to the island since the end of the Cold War, with many of those returned returning to the U.S. Navy in 2014.

The exercise - which is scheduled to run from July 1 - is part of an ongoing maritime security exercise involving the U.S. Navy and the European navy.
