"I am also very committed to the development of a plan for a long-term, and very competitive, nuclear power program," he said, stressing that he was talking about a "decarbonized" power plant. "I would like to continue to build on some of the advantages of the nuclear industry, including the availability of electricity from the sun, the renewable energy sources that we share, which is going to be one of the key priorities of the French government."

On the clean energy front, Macron also mentioned the French government's support for green energy, noting that the French government is on board with setting up the Paris Climate Accord (a Paris Agreement in which Europe and the United States agree to support climate action) and the Paris Agreement. Both the Paris deal and the Paris Agreement call for reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 80 per cent, but the Paris accord also calls for more than doubling the carbon dioxide output of wind turbines. Macron said that while this would raise the country's energy efficiency standards, they would be met by putting less energy into fossil fuels. "The goal is to achieve something that would be in the best interest of the environment and of the economy," he said, using the word "environmentally."

While Macron is very close to pushing for such an agreement, he did so in a recent interview with Bloomberg News where he suggested that Germany might have to be forced to change its energy policy. In an interview with Bloomberg, Macron said the German government was "very open to discussing these discussions," and that the current government will have to act sooner rather than later. After reading the interview, the French government's energy minister, Michel Sapin, tweeted that the decision would be made by the end of the year.

France has already started talking about nuclear power. The country's nuclear regulator is expected to announce its decision today, and is expected to put out a statement on Wednesday, with the country's Energy Ministry noting that France has a new reactor option that is still in the works.
