FireEye said the attacks are particularly sophisticated, based on the ability of the Domain Name System to create a set of record-based records that the attackers can use to manipulate IP addresses, including the domain's unique identifier.
"This type of pattern of attacks is particularly insidious because it can lead the system to erroneously determine that a website is a legitimate Web site," the researchers wrote.
Although the attacks appear to be relatively uncommon, the attacks appear to be more sophisticated than previously thought, FireEye said in a statement.
"These attacks are designed to hijack the system to create a set of DNS records," it said. "Additionally, this system can then use these records to generate a set of arbitrary certificate and domain name records (also known as PTRs)."
The attacks are most common in the United States, where the attacks are most common. However, the attacks appear to be most prevalent in Europe, where the attacks are most common.
FireEye said the attacks appear to be more sophisticated than previously thought, and it is not yet sure whether the attacks have a broad impact, or if the attacks take down websites and web sites.
"These attacks are targeting a particular domain and can use a variety of techniques to compromise multiple domain names, including DNS spoofing, spoofing with a domain as a root domain, spoofing the DNS server, spoofing with a foreign DNS server, spoofing with an address as a root node, and/or spoofing with a public DNS server," it said.
FireEye said it found about 30 different possible sources of the attacks, which could potentially have affected Internet access in the United States. The attacks came from a combination of domains and web sites linked to a common target, according to the statement.
The attacks include the IP address associated with the target's own Web site, which is used in many Internet domains to identify the targets. FireEye said it found a variety of such URLs in the domain.
“The attackers are believed to be targeting three different websites in the United States. At least two of the websites are located in California, and the rest are located in Europe. Nineteen of the websites are located in the United States, and the remaining nine are located in other countries.
“FireEye said the attacks can be used to compromise computers on the Internet.
"The number of websites affected by this pattern of attacks is estimated to be about 4.5 million users. The average number of computer-related data breaches in the United
