Despite the disappointing results, Cook said the company "wants to build a stronger, better future for us." Analysts were hopeful of a strong future for the company in November when Apple announced that it was pulling back from its iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus models.

"We think the iPhone is going to be stronger," Cook said at a conference last month. "We expect that the next few months will provide a lot of growth for the brand, and we expect that the next couple of quarters will allow us to take a step forward."

Cook also said that Apple was working on a new strategy for iPhone sales through product development, noting that more than 30 percent of all iPhones sold in North America are sold through the iPhone Store, making it the most important of the three major mobile platforms in the country.

"The number one priority in the iPhone is to give you a good product," he said. "Now, we're really looking at our next steps. It's time for us to take a step back from the iPhone. We're looking at a better product that has better value."

Apple's revenue was up $1.8 billion from a year ago. The company reported a 0.7 percent sales increase from the quarter ended December 31.

Apple's revenue rose $1.4 billion from a year ago, up $1.4 billion from a year earlier and $1.2 billion from the same quarter last year.

Analysts surveyed by Fortune have expected revenue of $49 billion from Q2 to $54 billion from the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus in Q1 this year.
