They used a special gas chromatograph to spot a source of sewage, a piece of the chemical used to disinfect the sewer. It was found to contain no traces of organic matter.

The smell was like the smell of rotting eggs rotting in a bag. A small group of activists came out of nowhere to show the waste to the public, which was promptly given an explanation for why it had been there since long before it was noticed that it was.
