But the administration hasn't issued a ruling yet, so it's uncertain when a decision will come.
"The Supreme Court might be able to reverse this decision if it comes down to policy and precedent," said Adam Eberstadt, a professor of law at the University of California, Berkeley, who chaired the FCC advisory panel overseeing the telecom lobby's fight. The NFLPA announced Monday that Dawkins, the former NFL wide receiver and vice president of broadcasting and public affairs for the San Francisco 49ers, has been appointed to a six-year contract, the latest of an illustrious career with NFL teams and the league's largest franchise.
"Brian, a man of his word, will provide us with a great perspective and a great organization to build on," the NFLPA said in a release. "He is highly regarded in the NFL and we look forward to working with him as we work our way through this process of hiring Brian."
Dawkins will oversee an array of public affairs, broadcast and media functions, including a national conference room and a newsroom. He will also oversee the NFL's news teams and will serve as the liaison between NFL owners and league executives.
"I am incredibly excited to work with Brian and continue to build on our historic and growing ownership group with the NFL and our fans," said 49ers owner Jed York. "I feel extremely fortunate to be able to be able to be that person with the resources and the passion to build a successful and successful league. As I mentioned before, I am extremely excited to be able to serve as the NFL's public affairs director and a partner for the NFL and our fans."
