The company's new CEO, Elon Musk, has been busy since the launch of the Model 3. He announced the company's planned $1 billion acquisition of the Autopilot program in February.
The $1 billion deal was reportedly part of Musk's plan to reduce battery costs, but Musk hasn't yet taken on the new Model 3.
A couple of months ago, Musk, the head of Tesla's "all-electric car" line, told The New York Times that "the world's going to be on autopilot once the Model 3 is fully operational, which will take a few years." Tesla CEO Elon Musk, on the other hand, has been critical of the Model 3's lack of safety features and security features, but Tesla has continued to support the launch of the Model S and Model X.
Tesla's new Model 3 is scheduled to ship on March 8, 2017. Tesla has just over 30 million customers worldwide.
It is also unclear how many Model 3 owners had the Model 3, but according to the U.S. Consumer Electronics Show, about 2.5 million customers have bought the car.
Update: The New York Times reports that Musk is on leave from his company's Worldwide Partner program. In a statement, he said, "In the past, I have worked with a few of my partners in the WPP Program, including our global partners, to increase my workforce. As we work to build the future of our business, we will continue to invest in the technology and services we are investing in to serve our customers. This is a great opportunity to build momentum and make the Tesla Model 3 a reality."
Tesla's CEO Elon Musk on the Model 3 Launch: "The Model 3 will be a new level of innovation that will have a profound impact on how we do business and how we deliver on the promises of the Model S."
Tesla is the lead developer of the Model 3, and the company is working on several products. The company recently announced two new products for the Model 3:
