As part of the hearing, Google will be allowed to
As part of the hearing, Google will be allowed to answer questions about the company's search rankings, which were recently criticized by former Google executive Peter Thiel for being biased toward Democratic candidates. The company is also required to submit a "public notice that it will no longer be able to engage in any activities related to the search queries on behalf of the Company" after the hearing is over, to avoid possible public reprimand.
As part of the hearing, Google is also allowed to request that Google be held on "unlawful and unenforceable charges" for violating the Electronic Communications Privacy Act and other laws that protect users from being held liable for any data collected by the company. The company is also required to disclose such records in any court proceeding.
Google's actions during the hearing are also expected to prompt Congressional hearings on privacy legislation, as well as privacy privacy and Internet privacy. Additionally, Google CEO Sundar Pichai and Google VP Dick Costolo will be testifying in Congress.
