Apple was in talks about making its own chips, but Apple said it was too early to tell what that might entail, but a "major step forward" in the world of mobile chip manufacturing would "impact both the company and the world at large." Dialog is currently working on a prototype that will be used in smartphones and tablets. In addition, the company has a growing line of high-end mobile chips, including the iPad and iPhone, that can support Apple's new phones and tablets, including iDevices, the newest iPhones, and the upcoming iPad. The company has more than 30,000 chips in production and expects to be able to produce about 30,000 more chips in the future.

The deal will also pay Dialog a combined $1.6 billion to set up a new research and development center in China, where it's working on new chips for Apple's next-generation devices. And Apple is expected to begin manufacturing a new iPhone next year, with the company making the phones available within two years.
